A familiar country ballad became a mother’s private prayer after a summer river took her oldest son from her.
In July 1984 Loretta Lynn lay in an intensive care unit in Illinois while her family searched desperately for Jack Benny Lynn back home in Tennessee.
She had already become one of country music’s most recognizable stars after the songs the awards and the Oscar-winning film Coal Miner’s Daughter made her a household name.
None of that fame mattered when tragedy struck the family ranch in Hurricane Mills Tennessee.
Jack Benny Lynn was born on December 7 1949 and unlike several of the Lynn children he preferred working outdoors.
He trained horses worked as a blacksmith and helped maintain the family ranch while remaining close to his wife and three children.
On July 22 1984 Jack Benny tried to cross the Duck River on horseback near the Tennessee property and he never made it home.
When his horse was found near the riverbank the family feared the worst and search teams began working along the water.
Loretta was recovering in Mount Vernon Illinois after becoming seriously ill while returning from a performance.
In a 2016 public television documentary her son Ernest Ray recalled sitting beside her in the hospital.
Ernest Ray said Loretta repeatedly insisted that something was wrong with Jack Benny even though nobody had told her that Jack Benny was missing.
At first he reassured her by saying Jack Benny was at the ranch with Doolittle.
Then Ernest Ray received a call from Doolittle and learned that Jack Benny had not returned home and that the horse had been found.
He chose not to tell Loretta while the search continued.
On July 24 searchers recovered Jack Benny’s body from the Duck River and he was only 34 years old.
Doolittle drove from Tennessee to Illinois to deliver the devastating news personally.
Decades later Loretta remembered the terrible moment when Doolittle arrived and told her that Jack Benny had died.
The loss affected the entire family and Ernest Ray recalled that the family’s performing work largely stopped for almost three years.
For Loretta the grief was deeply personal because Jack Benny shared her love of farming planting and working with the land.
Even as time passed Loretta continued speaking about Jack Benny with affection and the memories of his childhood family and love of horses remained precious.
Years later Loretta revealed an unexpected connection between Jack Benny and a song made famous by Willie Nelson.
On July 22 2022 the 38th anniversary of Jack Benny’s death Loretta published a deeply personal remembrance on the official Loretta Lynn website.
In that message she revealed that after losing Jack Benny she began singing Always on My Mind.
The song had taken on a meaning beyond its familiar romantic interpretation.
For Loretta singing Always on My Mind became a way of telling Jack Benny that he was still remembered and loved.
Millions of country fans knew Willie Nelson’s recording but many had never heard why Loretta connected the song to her son.
In the same remembrance she encouraged families who had lost a child to keep talking about their loved ones rather than avoiding their names.
I love hearing his name.
Those simple words explained why remembering Jack Benny remained so important to Loretta.
Loretta Lynn died on October 4 2022 at age 90 just a few months after sharing that final anniversary remembrance.
Jack Benny had been gone for 38 years longer than the time Loretta had been able to spend with him during his lifetime.
But the memories had never disappeared.
For fans who grew up hearing Willie Nelson sing Always on My Mind the song now carries another story of a mother who found a way to remember her son through music.
That may be one of the most personal meanings a familiar country song has ever carried.
